Mystery Express invites you to a race against time filled with tension, horror and chilling secrets. Travel to sunny California in 1973. What first appears to be a beautiful, carefree place quickly becomes your friend's nightmare, all because of an unfortunate choice of motel hiding a secret too terrifying to speak about.
In 1960, the luxurious Hotel California on Golden State Frontage Road was completely destroyed by fire. In an instant, the flames consumed the entire building and its lavish furnishings, turning a once vibrant place into ruins. None of the guests or staff were harmed. The only exceptions were the owner, Jennifer Malu, and her husband, Manoi Malu. They were pulled from the flames during a heroic rescue operation and taken to hospital. Jennifer survived despite extensive burns, but her husband died.
The events of that night caused a sensation and still inspire speculation. The fire department concluded that the tragedy was caused by a guest accidentally starting the fire. Local residents have a different view. They believe the blaze was no accident and point out that the hotel owner had long been unpopular with some of her neighbours because of her openness and kindness towards Black guests, which parts of the community opposed at the time.
Several years later, to everyone's surprise, Jennifer began building a new property on the same land. It opened in 1971.
